Kabul – Intercontinental

The Honorable Sheikh al-Hadith, Dr. Noor Mohammad Saqib, Minister of MOHIA, delivered a speech at the international academic and research conference entitled “The Role and Status of the Scholarly Legacy of Imam Burhan al-Din al-Marghinani (May Allah Have Mercy on Him) in Contemporary Islamic Sciences.”

The conference was organized by the Afghanistan Academy of Sciences in Kabul. In addition to a fourteen-member delegation led by Mufti Hamid Jan Ishmatbekov, Deputy Head of the Religious Affairs Administration of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a number of senior officials from various departments of the Islamic Emirate, scholars, professors, researchers, and representatives of various academic and religious institutions also participated in the conference.

During his speech at the academic and research conference, the Honorable Minister of MOHIA spoke about the rank and virtues of the eminent Islamic jurists, as well as the scholarly personality and intellectual legacy of Imam Burhan al-Din al-Marghinani (May Allah Have Mercy on Him), the great Hanafi scholar.

The Minister stated that the Holy Qur’an and the Prophetic traditions place particular emphasis on acquiring knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence and the rulings of Sharia. According to a number of Qur’anic commentators, Verse 269 of Surah al-Baqarah:

{يُؤْتِي الْحِكْمَةَ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَمَنْ يُؤْتَ الْحِكْمَةَ فَقَدْ أُوتِيَ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا وَمَا يَذَّكَّرُ إِلَّا أُولُو الْأَلْبَابِ}

which is translated as:

“He grants wisdom to whom He wills; and whoever is granted wisdom has certainly been granted abundant good. And none will take heed except those of sound intellect.”

— indicates that wisdom has been interpreted as beneficial knowledge accompanied by practice, as well as deep understanding and knowledge of religion and Islamic jurisprudence.

Referring to the well-known saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him):

“مَن يُرِدِ اللهُ به خيرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ في الدِّينِ”

meaning, “When Allah intends good for someone, He grants him understanding of the religion,” the Honorable Minister stated that Imam al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim (May Allah have mercy on them) narrated this hadith from Mu‘awiyah (May Allah be pleased with him) in their respective Sahih collections.

He added that scholars of Hadith and Islamic scholarship have stated regarding this hadith that acquiring deep understanding of religion is among the signs of divine goodness. Among the people on earth, other than the noble Prophets (peace be upon them), it cannot be known with certainty concerning any individual whether Allah Almighty has intended good or harm for them, because the Prophets (peace be upon them) are protected from sin and are an exception. Therefore, apart from the Prophets (peace be upon them), it can be understood specifically regarding scholars that Allah Almighty has intended good for them; whereas His divine will concerning others is not known to us.

Referring to the main theme of the conference, the Honorable Minister of MOHIA discussed in detail the scholarly status and personality of Imam Burhan al-Din Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Abi Bakr ibn Abd al-Jalil al-Farghani al-Marghinani (May Allah Have Mercy on Him), stating that he was one of the great Imams of Hanafi jurisprudence and one of the prominent scholarly figures of the Islamic world.

Imam Burhan al-Din al-Marghinani (May Allah Have Mercy on Him) was born on Monday, the eighth of Rajab al-Murajjab in the year 511 AH, in the renowned city of Marghinan in the Farghana region of Transoxiana. This land has long been a cradle and birthplace of numerous eminent scholars and Hadith scholars, as well as a major center of the scholarl
